The question is should I paint the brick? I hate this wall-yes these brick take up an entire wall. Should I paint it...if so what color? I need your help! I plan on taking down the brass trim too.

I wouldn't paint it. I would cover it with drywall...you would still have a mantle and a fireplace. I've seen this done on HGTV. You could check the internet too.
ReplyDeletePaint, yes, paint!!! I know brick soaks up a ton of paint, but it would look sooo nice in white. You can also buy special paint for fireplace surrounds to cover up the brass.
ReplyDeleteI think the dark mantel and shelves would look so nice with the white paint, and you could add pops of color with some accessories on the shelves.
Thank you so much for linking up to my party! I hope you have a fun time visiting around. :)
My vote is for paint. My grandparents had a large red brick wall/fireplace that they painted white 30 years ago. I think they only had to paint it the one time. It changed the entire look of the room. You wouldn't even have to paint it white--just lighten it with one single color--caramel, taupe, or antique white would all be nice. Depending on the other colors in the room, even a really pale aqua could work. (Think vintage painted signs on old brick walls.) Even if it takes tons of paint, go for it!
ReplyDeletePaint! This would be so pretty painted a creamy white! I say leave the mantel and shelves dark! This would brighten up the room too. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteIf this were my house- that brick would be getting painted white! It would make your room so much brighter and it would appear larger than it is- it would look amazing!!! If you paint it, PLEASE post a pic!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, paint it for sure. I vote for white or off white. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I would paint it. My in-laws had a wall very similar to that in their living room. They painted it white and it made the whole room seem tons bigger. Then the focus would be on what's on your mantle instead of the stone. I can't wait to see what you do!

I actually like the brick. I think it would look great if you left the fireplace brick and put some painted bead board in the book shelves on the sides.(bead board because it is easier than sheet rock) White shelves would help brighten it up, and maybe something different with the mantle...but I just love a brick fireplace!! and yours is in great shape!
ReplyDeleteI actually like the brick. I would leave it and cover the shelves on the sides with some white bead board (easier than sheetrock). Then it wouldn't be an entire wall of brick, it would just be an awesome fireplace with built-ins! I wish I had one!!
ReplyDeleteI think the fireplace would look great tan, and then you could paint a light accent color like blue or green on the brick behind your bookshelves. Definitely share pictures if make any changes!
ReplyDeleteOy! I recognize the 1970's cedar mantle and brick trend.
ReplyDeleteTry a watered-down white or ecru "white wash" first. If you like it, stop.
Otherwise, PAINT it!
Remove the fireplace glass doors, if possible. Or use heat-resistant paint on the brass metal doors.
Cover the front and sides of the mantle with wood molding and trim. And of course, paint it.
De-junk the shelves and yes, paint. Add a strip of wood molding to the front of the shelves for a wider looking thickness to better coordinate with the hefty mantle.
I would paint the brink above the mantle and the brick inthe bookshelves an off white or cream
ReplyDeleteYou should totally paint it. white or cream would be good. It would make the room look so much bigger!
ReplyDeleteI don't like the brick. Mostly because it's way too much of it. I'd start by covering the brick to the sides of the fireplace as many have suggested with bead board, some nice white shelving. Then, if the fireplace is still too much I think I'd try refacing it completely. Check this idea out, I think you could do it DIY. http://thepioneerwoman.com/homeandgarden/2010/05/bye-bye-eyeballs/
ReplyDeletePaint it white! :)
ReplyDeleteYESSSSS! Paint the brick a creamy white color and then paint the brass on your fireplace black. It will look AMAZING!!
ReplyDeleteNot sure if you ever did anything with the fireplace...but I would have lightened the sides where the bookcases are and left the brick fireplace alone. You don't really have that 70s red brick; it almost looks reclaimed which is very trendy now. Whatever color you use on the bookcases carry over to the mantle to tie it all together. And yes the brass surround has to go! That's an easy fix though.
